Journer: Is there such a thing as authentic religion?
Nez: My student* said, “Real religion produces the spirit of humility and repentance. It destroys moral conceit.”
Journer: What does “moral conceit” mean?
Nez: You’ve heard of conceited, know-it-all, self-important, righteous? Those who think themselves superior in relation to other humans and the earth will be humiliated and brought to their knees.

Reinhold was still teaching at Union Seminary (NYC) when I was first there in 1960, but he had by that time limited his classes to upper class students. I was sorry to miss him and Tillich by just a year or two. DZ
